PRE-DELTA
NATIONAL PARK
Province of Entre Rios
This National
Park was created to preserve a sample of the upper delta of the Paraná
river. It covers an area of 2458 ha in the SW of the province of Entre
Ríos, 6 km south of the town of Diamante. This park has been declared
part of the Delta Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO
THE NATURE
OF THE PARK
The numerous islands are typical
of the delta islands with their wooded levees and inland depressions occupied
by lagoons and flooded grasslands.
From La Azotea where one can arrive by road there is a trail for exploring
the waterside woods of native willow and Tessaria where the freckle-breasted
thornbird hangs its large twig nests. Here the capybara leaves its classic
footprints on the trail.
The dominant vegetation is of dense reedbeds and rushes with waterplants,
including Victoria regia with its huge circular floating leaves up to
three feet in diameter which have vicious thorns on their outer and underparts.
On the islands riverine woods dominated by the coral tree back onto low
centres of the islands where some open water is found as well as dense
stands of taller grasses. Here the coypu and the parana otter as well
as the short-snouted cayman are found. Ducks of many species, the limpkin,
screamers, storks and herons as well as kingfishers are all common. Because
of its abundance and visibility the ringed kingfisher, the largest hereabouts,
is the symbol of the park.
HOW TO GET THERE
Access from the north
(Paraná city) is along route 11 to Diamante. From here there is
a dirt road to La Azotea and La Jaula bordering the park.
OF INTEREST TO
THE VISITOR
Access to the park is obviously
by boat and should be agreed with the ranger. In La Azotea (outside the
park) there is a store and public telephone. At La Jaula, close by, there
are two nature trails and a primitive camping area with fire-sites, allowing
for a closer appreciation of the nature of the area.
