EL REY NATIONAL PARK It is situated
in the North, toward the center of the province of Salta, in the Department
of Anta. It was declared as National Park in 1948. It used to be a farm
donated by the King (el Rey) of Spain to the Coronel Fernández
Cornejo in merit to his actions in favor to the Crown, and it is called
"El Rey" because of this anecdote.
The valley is all spread out by dense vegetation, making its pass very
difficult.
This park helps the local economy; assisting in the hydric regulation,
being essential for the development of the agriculture in this area. This
park possesses a small hotel, a campsite, nice paths for walking, bird
and fauna watching.
BARITÚ
NATIONAL PARK
It was declared as a National Park in 1974, it is situated in the Norhwest
of the province, in the department of Santa Victoria. Baritú comes
from the quechua language: "small town".
This park is surrounded by mountains with an altitude of 2000 metres above
sea level, within this area, one can find a few families living in small
houses, scattered in the park. In an evident contrast with their neighbors
from Bolivia, these families show their Spanish appearance.
The park is reached by a four wheel drive vehicle, on foot, on horse or
on mule.
This journey is probably the longest and most difficult in the region.
The road is well marked but hard and extremely rough. The merit of this
route lies in the immensity of the forest with its ancient trees and giant
ferns, that take us back to prehistoric flora, which totally justify this
colorful adventure.
LOS CARDONES
NATIONAL PARK
It has been declared as a National Park in 1996. It is situated in the
South of the province. It protects animal on risk of extinction like the
vicuña, taruca or huemul from the North. Because of its similarity
it can be compared with the Saguaro Natural Monument or the Organ Pipe
Cactus in U.S.A.
The park, almost a desert, seems to live adverse due its dryness, lack
of vegetation and scarce fauna, in spite of these , it is one of the most
stunning landscapes in the province; and in this region where life is
difficult, exists a mineral resource: limestone. This element contains
well kept fosils of fish and dinosaurs of our past geological ages.
"Los Cardones" with its vigilant and gigantic cacti, is a paradise
for photographers and offers you other optional activities like watching
fauna and flora, sightseeing and mountain climbing.
