SKI IN ARGENTINA
CAVIAHUE SKI CENTRE
- NEUQUÉN, ARGENTINA
Characterized by quietness and a pristine atmosphere, Caviahue -"party
or meeting place" in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche- is
situated right on the Andes at 1647 meters above sea level in the north-west
of Neuquén province.
It is a mountain village lying at the foot of the Copahue volcano, on
the shores of the Caviahue lake. Sitting in the 28,300-hectare Copahue-Caviahue
Provincial Park, amid pehuenes (Araucaria araucana or monkey puzzle trees),
lakes, ponds, basalt terraces, thermal springs and mallines de altura
(muddy and verdant hilltop areas), this village offers visitors a unique
spectacle: it is covered in snow even in spring.
In this tourist center and mountain station, where you can practice alpine
skiing and langlauf on extensive runs, the ski season and the snow last
for 4 to 5 months.
About 11 miles (18 km) from the resort and at 1,900 meters above sea level,
the renowned Termas de Copahue thermal springs - a health and beauty spa
- boast a wonderful microclimate characterized by dry and pure air.
