THE ELQUI VALLEY

A narrow, irrigated valley pinched between the high, arid peaks of the Andes, the Valle Elqui is the heart of Chile's pisco -producing region, site of the southern hemisphere's clearest skies, and birthplace of Nobel prize-winning poet Gabriela Mistral. At the mouth of the valley is the colonial city and beach resort of La Serena.
